About Insomniac Games

Insomniac Games is an American video game developer and a wholly owned subsidiary of Sony Interactive Entertainment within PlayStation Studios. Founded in 1994 and renamed from Xtreme Software in 1995, the studio first released the PlayStation first-person shooter Disruptor in 1996 before establishing itself with the original Spyro the Dragon trilogy.

The studio is known for long-running action, platforming, and science-fiction franchises. Its work includes the Ratchet & Clank series, the Resistance trilogy, Sunset Overdrive, and virtual-reality titles including Edge of Nowhere, The Unspoken, and Stormland. More recently, Insomniac developed Marvel's Spider-Man, Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Marvel's Spider-Man 2, and Marvel's Wolverine.

Game development capabilities

Insomniac develops AAA games across the full production cycle, combining creative direction, narrative development, systems and level design, gameplay and graphics programming, technical art, animation, audio, quality assurance, and optimization. Its specialties include action-adventure and platformer design, combat and traversal systems, immersive world simulation, character rigging, facial-animation workflows, and real-time cinematic animation.

The studio uses its proprietary Insomniac Engine and performance-capture workflows to support high-fidelity interactive experiences. Its work spans PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 console releases as well as Windows PC gaming, with experience in both traditional console development and VR interactive projects.

PlayStation Studios

Insomniac operates as an active first-party PlayStation Studios developer under Sony Interactive Entertainment. Following Sony's acquisition of the studio in 2019, it has continued to build games for PlayStation's portfolio while maintaining a unified development structure across its U.S. studios.
