About Larian Studios

Larian Studios is an independent game developer and publisher founded in Ghent, Belgium in 1996 by Swen Vincke. The studio develops deep, narrative-driven role-playing games built around player agency, branching dialogue, tactical turn-based combat and systemic environmental interaction.

Its work spans the long-running Divinity series and Baldur’s Gate 3, alongside earlier projects including The L.E.D. Wars, Divine Divinity, Beyond Divinity, Divinity II: Ego Draconis and Divinity: Dragon Commander. After difficult experiences with traditional publishing, the company shifted toward self-financing and self-publishing, using Kickstarter and early access to support Divinity: Original Sin and establish a more independent development model.

Game development capabilities

Larian’s production capabilities include:

  • Full-lifecycle game development, covering systems engineering, narrative writing, 3D art, level design, lighting, sound design, scoring and quality assurance.
  • Proprietary RPG engine development through the Divinity Engine, plus multi-platform porting for PC, macOS, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
  • Motion capture, performance capture and cinematic animation.
  • Co-operative multiplayer, split-screen play and cross-platform progression.
  • Post-launch support, patch engineering and community modding infrastructure.

The company operates as a global, independent publisher as well as a developer. Its multi-studio production model supports a follow-the-sun workflow across Europe, North America and Southeast Asia, bringing together narrative, gameplay, engine, art, animation, audio, publishing and technical teams.

Current direction

Baldur’s Gate 3, released in 2023, became one of Larian’s most prominent releases and received major Game of the Year recognition. Following the game’s launch, Larian stated that it would not develop Baldur’s Gate 4 or additional DLC, choosing instead to focus on two original RPG projects, including a return to the Divinity universe.

Larian remains privately held. Swen Vincke and his wife retain majority control, while Tencent holds a passive minority equity stake.

More about Larian Studios

Independence and production history

Larian’s move to self-financing and self-publishing followed publisher-mandated compromises and cash-flow pressure during development of Divinity II: Ego Draconis. The studio subsequently used Kickstarter and early access to fund Divinity: Original Sin.

Recognition

Baldur’s Gate 3 received Game of the Year honours from The Game Awards, BAFTA, D.I.C.E., GDC and the Golden Joystick Awards.

Team safety milestone

Following Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, Larian closed its Saint Petersburg studio to prevent employees from being drafted and relocated more than 90% of its Russian staff to other international studios.
