About Activision

Activision is a video game publisher and development organization founded in 1979. Established by former Atari game designers David Crane, Larry Kaplan, Alan Miller and Bob Whitehead alongside music executive Jim Levy, the company began as an independent third-party cartridge software developer. Its early releases included Kaboom!, Pitfall! and River Raid.

Following a temporary period under the Mediagenic name and later restructuring, Activision expanded into a global interactive-entertainment business. In 2008, it merged with Vivendi Games to form Activision Blizzard. Microsoft completed its acquisition of Activision Blizzard in 2023; Activision Publishing continues as an operating entity within Microsoft Gaming.

Publishing and development capabilities

Activision combines commercial publishing with central technology, production and live-service operations for console, PC and mobile games. Its capabilities include:

  • Full-cycle game production, technical development and global publishing
  • Engine technology, rendering systems, developer tooling and build pipelines
  • Motion capture, performance recording and 3D photogrammetry asset creation
  • Multiplayer networking, matchmaking, telemetry and live-operations infrastructure
  • Quality assurance, compliance, localization, customer support and player operations
  • Advertising, brand partnerships and media monetization

The organization supports a multi-studio development network, with internal central technology teams contributing engine, runtime, rendering and pipeline systems. Its Capture Studio provides motion-capture and photogrammetry production, while its quality-assurance and localization operations support releases across regions.

Games and franchises

Activision is particularly associated with the Call of Duty franchise and has published titles including Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2, Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, Spyro Reignited Trilogy and Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy.

Its technology and service work includes the RICOCHET Anti-Cheat initiative, online multiplayer infrastructure, and support for worldwide digital and physical distribution. Activision serves interactive-entertainment audiences across PC, console and mobile platforms.
