About Infinity Ward

Founded in 2002, Infinity Ward is a game-development studio best known for helping establish the modern first-person shooter through the Call of Duty franchise. Operating as an active subsidiary of Activision Publishing, the studio develops premium AAA games for PC and console, combining cinematic campaign production with multiplayer systems and live-service integration.

Its early releases included Call of Duty and Call of Duty 2, followed by the landmark Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. The studio continued the Modern Warfare series with Modern Warfare 2, Modern Warfare 3, and the 2019 reboot, and has contributed to later Modern Warfare releases and Call of Duty: Warzone.

Development capabilities

Infinity Ward’s work spans full-cycle game development, including:

  • Gameplay programming, combat-system design, and mechanics prototyping
  • Cinematic narrative production, character animation, rigging, and motion-capture execution
  • 3D environment art, asset generation, and photogrammetric scene reconstruction
  • Multiplayer network systems and live-service content integration
  • Rendering architecture, real-time graphics research, and game-engine engineering

The studio’s proprietary IW Engine is a central part of its technical work. Its Poland-based R&D operation has contributed to rendering architecture and to rebuilding the modern engine, with work including volumetric lighting, photogrammetry, and spectral rendering for the franchise’s contemporary productions.

Studio history

Infinity Ward was founded by Vince Zampella, Grant Collier, Jason West, and other developers previously associated with Medal of Honor: Allied Assault. Activision acquired the studio in 2003 following the debut of the original Call of Duty. In 2014, Activision merged sister studio Neversoft Entertainment into Infinity Ward, consolidating personnel and operations under the Infinity Ward banner.

Today, Infinity Ward maintains specialized development branches in the United States, Poland, Mexico, and Spain. Its teams support creative direction, engineering, design, animation, environment art, and technology development for Call of Duty experiences.
