About CoolGames
CoolGames is an Amsterdam-based developer and publisher of casual HTML5 and cloud games. Its instant-play titles are designed to run across browsers, messaging services, social ecosystems and cloud subscription platforms without requiring a client download.
The company combines game development with publishing and distribution for web and mobile-web audiences. Its work spans concept development, engineering, UX/UI, level design, quality assurance, live operations and analytics-led updates. CoolGames also adapts established entertainment and game properties into cross-platform casual experiences, while supporting third-party distribution through portals, telecommunications partners and platform networks.
Platform-focused game development
CoolGames specializes in HTML5 game engineering, cloud-based gaming architecture and post-app-store distribution. Its platform work includes instant games and activities for services such as Facebook Instant Games, Discord Activities, Snapchat Minis and Microsoft Start. The studio’s portfolio includes puzzle, match-3, grid, arcade and licensed casual titles, with experience in live balancing, retention tuning and ad-monetization pipelines.
Selected projects include Tetris Twist, Hasbro's Battleship, Farm Merge Valley, Snake for Messenger, Monopoly Sudoku, Angry Birds, Pac-Man Run, Arkanoid, Jewel Academy, Daily Solitaire, Daily Sudoku and Storm Skaters.
Company development
The business rebranded from BoosterMedia to CoolGames in February 2016, when it also merged with Dutch HTML5 developer Tingly Games and consolidated the combined development operations in Amsterdam. Later that year, CoolGames was selected as a global launch partner for Facebook Instant Games, bringing titles including Tetris and Pac-Man to Messenger.
Keesing Media Group acquired CoolGames in July 2023 as part of its expansion in digital casual and puzzle gaming. CoolGames remains an active specialized gaming division within the group and also maintains a Tokyo satellite office serving Japanese and broader Asian business-development relationships.
More about CoolGames
Founding and early operating model
CoolGames was founded in 2009 by entrepreneur Laurens Rutten under the original name BoosterMedia. In its early phase, the business developed distribution networks with European and Asian telecommunications operators, web portals and media conglomerates—an operating foundation for its later browser-first and instant-play game distribution model.
2016 studio combination
At Casual Connect Europe on 23 February 2016, BoosterMedia announced both its rebrand to CoolGames and its merger with Dutch HTML5 developer Tingly Games. Tingly Games CEO Ard Bonewald became Head of Studio for CoolGames; the combination doubled internal development capacity and consolidated the development organization in Amsterdam.
