About Arrowhead Game Studios
Arrowhead Game Studios is an independent Swedish game developer founded in 2008 by students from Luleå University of Technology in Skellefteå. Now based in Stockholm, the studio develops cooperative action games for global PC and console audiences, with an emphasis on shared challenges, emergent player interactions and deliberately chaotic friendly-fire systems.
The studio’s catalogue began with Magicka, a student-developed project that won Game of the Year at the 2008 Swedish Game Awards before being published by Paradox Interactive in 2011. Arrowhead followed it with the satirical multiplayer brawler The Showdown Effect and its reimagining of Gauntlet, building experience across action, multiplayer and dungeon-crawling formats.
Cooperative action games
Arrowhead is especially known for the Helldivers franchise. The original Helldivers launched in 2015 as a top-down twin-stick cooperative shooter, while Helldivers 2 shifted the series into an over-the-shoulder third-person format when it launched in 2024. The sequel became a major global release, reaching more than 12 million copies sold in its first four months and later expanding to Xbox Series X/S.
Its full-cycle development capabilities span game design, software engineering, 3D art, animation, level design, narrative design, backend architecture, quality assurance and live operations. Technical and design specialties include C++ systems programming, cooperative multiplayer design, third-person and twin-stick shooters, worldbuilding, satirical narrative and live-service operations.
