About Wizards of the Coast LLC

Wizards of the Coast LLC is an American tabletop game publisher and interactive digital game studio founded in 1990 by Peter Adkison. It designs, develops and publishes collectible trading card games, tabletop role-playing games and digital game experiences, with a portfolio centered on Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons.

The company helped establish the modern collectible card game category with Magic: The Gathering in 1993. Its 1997 acquisition of TSR brought Dungeons & Dragons under its stewardship, expanding Wizards’ role across tabletop rules design, fantasy worldbuilding, publishing and organized play. Hasbro acquired Wizards in 1999; the company remains an active part of Hasbro’s Wizards & Digital division.

Tabletop, digital and publishing work

Wizards combines physical game publishing with digital products and services. Its work includes game design, writing, editing, manufacturing and publishing; digital game production and co-development; subscription and companion-platform operations; and intellectual-property licensing and publishing partnerships.

Key capabilities include:

  • Collectible and trading card games
  • Tabletop role-playing games and game-systems design
  • Digital RPGs, virtual tabletops and companion software
  • Organized play, tournament sanctioning and retailer support through the Wizards Play Network
  • Digital publishing and live-service game operations

The company’s digital portfolio includes Magic: The Gathering Arena and D&D Beyond, the official D&D digital character-sheet, compendium and virtual-tabletop platform. Its publishing history also includes Duel Masters, The Great Dalmuti, RoboRally, Netrunner and the Star Wars Trading Card Game.

Franchise development

Wizards manages its flagship properties across tabletop, digital and transmedia formats. Magic: The Gathering has expanded through the Universes Beyond crossover program, while Dungeons & Dragons has continued through Fifth Edition, the 2024 core-rules revision, digital tools and new entertainment adaptations.

Its wider development network supports first-party and partner-led video-game publishing. Upcoming projects include Exodus, developed by Archetype Entertainment, and Warlock, developed by Invoke Studios. The company also operates internal teams focused on D&D digital tools, digital-game engineering and future multiplatform development.
