About Wētā FX
Wētā FX is a Wellington-founded visual effects and digital animation studio serving feature films, premium episodic television, themed entertainment, advertising and special film projects. Originally established as Weta Digital in 1993 to create visual effects for Peter Jackson’s Heavenly Creatures, the company now works across visual effects production, digital character animation, simulation, compositing, lighting, look development and virtual-production support.
Its work combines performance-driven character creation with large-scale digital environments and effects. The studio’s capabilities include facial performance capture and FACS-based animation; digital humans and creatures; hair, fur and feather grooming; fluid, fire, smoke, cloth, tissue, destruction and crowd simulation; procedural world-building; digital matte painting; and deep-compositing workflows. Its Art Department also provides concept design and visual development for creatures, costumes, vehicles, architecture and worlds.

Wētā FX is associated with films including:
- The Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit trilogy
- Avatar, Avatar: The Way of Water and Avatar: Fire and Ash
- King Kong, District 9, The Adventures of Tintin and Alita: Battle Angel
- The Planet of the Apes films, including Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes

Evolution and production reach
Following a 2021 transaction in which Unity acquired Weta Digital’s software suite, proprietary pipeline tools and engineering division, the visual-effects and animation production business continued under Wētā FX Limited. The studio subsequently expanded its production presence internationally, with dedicated hubs in Vancouver and Melbourne alongside its Wellington headquarters.
Wētā FX remains active as a visual-effects and animation production company, combining artist-led design, complex simulation, rendering and compositing for screen-based storytelling and immersive entertainment.
