About Voices of the Forgotten
About Voices of the Forgotten
Voices of the Forgotten is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit interactive media studio dedicated to preserving Holocaust memory and combating antisemitism through immersive digital storytelling. Founded in 2021 by director Luc Bernard, the studio leverages video games, virtual museum environments, and educational media to engage younger generations, specifically targeting Gen Z and millennial audiences. By moving away from traditional gamification—such as combat mechanics or branching outcomes—the studio creates linear, narrative-driven historical experiences that emphasize the gravity and reality of the Holocaust.
Technical Approach and Production
The studio utilizes high-fidelity 3D technology to reconstruct historical environments and narratives. Key technical capabilities include:
- Unreal Engine 5 Development: Utilizing advanced features such as Nanite, Lumen, and World Partition to create photorealistic, immersive historical settings.
- Character Integration: Employing the MetaHuman framework for realistic facial animation and period-accurate character design.
- Platform-Native Education: Developing interactive exhibits within mainstream gaming platforms, such as the Fortnite Holocaust Museum, to reach global audiences in accessible, non-combat environments.
Educational Initiatives
Beyond standalone game development, the foundation partners with educators, public school districts, and cultural institutions to foster historical literacy. Programs like Anne Frank's Young Voices provide students with the tools to research survivors and design their own virtual museum exhibitions, bridging the gap between historical research and modern digital creation.
Notable Projects
- The Light in the Darkness: Director's Cut: An expanded, fully-voiced narrative experience documenting the persecution of a Polish-Jewish family in Nazi-occupied France, released for PlayStation 5 and PC.
- Tears of Libya: An upcoming project focusing on the history of the Jewish community in North Africa during World War II.
- Anne Frank's Life Story: A traditional, non-AI animated series produced for social media to educate audiences on the life and legacy of Anne Frank.
