About Vertigo Games
Vertigo Games is a Rotterdam-founded developer, publisher and immersive-entertainment studio focused on virtual reality, augmented reality and cross-platform games. Founded in 2008 by Richard Stitselaar and Vincent van Brummen, the company moved from its early Adam's Venture work into VR, building a catalogue that spans original development, external publishing and location-based entertainment.
Its breakthrough title, Arizona Sunshine, helped establish the studio in consumer and commercial VR. Vertigo later expanded its activities through Vertigo Publishing, which provides financing, production, marketing and distribution support to external developers, and Vertigo Arcades, its former venue-management and licensing initiative for VR arcades.
Development and publishing
Vertigo develops and publishes for PC, console and VR platforms, including Meta Quest, PlayStation VR2 and SteamVR. Its work encompasses immersive storytelling, multiplayer VR networking, volumetric-capture integration, PC and console ports, and out-of-home VR distribution.
Selected releases and publishing credits include:
- Arizona Sunshine and Arizona Sunshine 2
- After the Fall
- The 7th Guest VR and The 7th Guest Remake
- Arizona Sunshine Remake
- Skyworld and Skyworld: Kingdom Brawl
- A Fisherman's Tale and Another Fisherman's Tale
- Traffic Jams, Unplugged VR and Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow
The company also developed Metro Awakening through its former Amsterdam studio in collaboration with Deep Silver and 4A Games.
Company evolution
Vertigo Games was acquired by Koch Media in 2020; Koch Media subsequently rebranded as PLAION. Operating under PLAION within the Embracer Group, Vertigo has retained operational autonomy as a specialist games and XR business.
In recent years, the company has concentrated on game content and publishing while broadening selected properties beyond VR-only releases with flat-screen editions and adaptations. Its Amsterdam branch closed in June 2026 following difficult VR-market conditions, while Vertigo Games continues operations from Rotterdam with a North American commercial publishing presence in Los Angeles.
More about Vertigo Games
Origins and strategic shifts
Vertigo Games was founded by Richard Stitselaar and Vincent van Brummen after the closure of Coded Illusions. The founders acquired that company's 3D graphic assets to build the early Adam's Venture series, then divested the franchise's IP rights to Soedesco in 2015 to focus fully on virtual reality.
In July 2018, Vertigo established Vertigo Arcades and Vertigo Publishing, pairing VR venue-management and licensing activity with financing, production and distribution support for external developers. The company sold the SpringboardVR arcade platform to SynthesisVR in January 2025 while retaining an ongoing commercial content partnership.
Leadership and milestones
Richard Stitselaar is identified in the research as Vertigo Games' CEO and co-founder. In June 2026, he announced the permanent closure of Vertigo Studios Amsterdam, citing adverse and stagnant conditions in the VR market.
