About Techland

Techland is a Polish AAA game developer and publisher founded in 1991 by Paweł Marchewka. The company began by distributing software and translating foreign games for the Polish market before moving into in-house development in the 1990s. Its first self-developed release was the 1995 side-scrolling beat ’em up Prawo Krwi.

The studio creates premium, multiplatform interactive entertainment for PC and console audiences, with a particular focus on open-world first-person action-RPGs, survival horror, parkour-driven traversal, cooperative multiplayer, and long-term live-service support. Its teams cover the full game-production cycle, including narrative design, art, world-building, programming, audio, quality assurance, playtesting, publishing, and post-launch development.

Franchises and technology

Techland is known for the Call of Juarez, Dead Island, and Dying Light franchises. Dying Light combined open-world survival, melee combat, dynamic movement, and day-and-night systems, while Dying Light 2: Stay Human continued the series using the studio’s proprietary C-Engine. The company has also announced Dying Light: The Beast, a standalone adventure returning to protagonist Kyle Crane.

Technology has been central to Techland’s work since Chrome in 2003, which introduced the proprietary Chrome Engine. That engine supported the studio’s games for more than a decade and was also licensed to other developers. Its modern C-Engine underpins current production, alongside proprietary tooling, rendering systems, and cross-platform network engineering for cooperative play.

Development and publishing

Alongside internal development, Techland operates an international publishing business that releases its own titles and selected external projects. It provides multi-year support for its games through expansions, gameplay patches, seasonal events, and other live operations.

Techland operates from Poland, with its headquarters and principal development campus in Wrocław and a development studio in Warsaw. Tencent Holdings Ltd. acquired a controlling majority stake in 2023; founder Paweł Marchewka remains Chief Executive Officer, and the company has stated that it retains its intellectual-property ownership and creative independence.
