About Rocksteady Studios

Rocksteady Studios is a British AAA video game developer focused on narrative-driven action-adventure games for console and PC. Founded in 2004, the London-based studio is best known for creating the Batman: Arkham series, whose blend of cinematic storytelling, character-led world-building and third-person combat established the studio as a significant developer of licensed superhero games.

The company began with Urban Chaos: Riot Response before achieving international critical and commercial success with Batman: Arkham Asylum. Its work on the Arkham universe continued with Batman: Arkham City, Batman: Arkham Knight and the virtual-reality title Batman: Arkham VR. Rocksteady later released Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League in 2024.

Development capabilities

Rocksteady operates as a focused, single-project development studio, combining gameplay, systems and engine programming with narrative design, world design, visual-art production and platform optimisation. Its capabilities include:

  • AAA action-adventure game development
  • Character-driven cinematic narrative and world-building
  • Third-person melee and combat systems, including the "Freeflow" combat approach
  • Licensed comic-book and superhero franchise adaptations
  • Motion-capture production, performance direction and photogrammetry workflows
  • Unreal Engine engineering across Unreal Engine 3, 4 and 5
  • In-house audio design and orchestral scoring

The studio's production environment includes custom motion-capture, photogrammetry and audio-recording facilities, supporting both performance-led storytelling and detailed digital-world creation.

More about Rocksteady Studios

Leadership and studio history

Rocksteady was founded by Sefton Hill and Jamie Walker after the closure of Argonaut Games. Both co-founders stepped down from studio leadership at the end of 2022 after 18 years. Production veteran Nathan Burlow and product director Darius Sadeghian were subsequently elevated to studio co-heads, with directors including Bill Money joining the leadership group.

The company was built around a focused single-project model and has described its workplace culture as one centred on treating people well.
