About Preymaker

Preymaker is a creative technology and visual-effects collective founded in 2020 by former leaders of The Mill New York. Built as a cloud-native studio from the outset, it combines visual effects, animation, design, color, virtual production and immersive work for advertising, entertainment and interactive-media clients.

Its production infrastructure is designed for distributed collaboration. Rather than relying on a conventional on-premises render-farm model, the studio uses cloud-based artist workstations and scalable computing to support teams working across time zones. Its pipeline brings together tools including Maya, Arnold, Flame, Nuke, Houdini, Unreal Engine 5, OpenUSD and Autodesk Flow Production Tracking.

Creative capabilities

  • Photoreal visual effects, compositing, CG integration, matte painting and simulation
  • Character animation, digital humans, modeling, texturing, lighting and rendering
  • Real-time production, virtual cinematography and in-engine asset development
  • Motion design, title sequences, style frames and color grading
  • Spatial computing, VR, LED-volume content and architectural screen installations
  • Cloud-native pipeline design, workflow automation and production-technology consulting

Preymaker works across commercial advertising and brand campaigns, feature and episodic entertainment, gaming and interactive media, and technology, automotive and consumer-electronics markets. Its credits include Xfinity’s The Aviators, Toyota’s Into The Wild, FanDuel’s Think Like a Player, Volkswagen’s ID. Buzz BTS, Volvo’s Ultimate Safety Test, Google campaigns, and State Street Global Advisors’ Liquidity Maze.

The studio also develops original real-time work. Its 2022 short Blue, directed by Robert Petrie, was produced in the cloud and rendered in Unreal Engine without compositing. DENMARK is a real-time animated heist-thriller project using procedural Houdini-built assets and Unreal Engine 5 rendering. Alongside its production work, Preymaker applies generative and directed AI to character visualization and 2D/3D workflows.

More about Preymaker

Leadership and community

  • Angus Kneale is Chief Creative Officer and co-founder. Melanie Wickham and Verity Grantham are co-founders and executive producers.
  • The Cape Town studio was established after the founders’ long-running collaboration with South African animators on original projects, including Blue. It partners with The Animation School to offer local scholarships.

Cloud operating model

Preymaker describes its infrastructure as a fully virtualized cloud environment using AWS, WEKA NeuralMesh and remote-access technology. This model lets the studio provision and decommission high-performance Linux and Windows artist workstations according to production needs, supporting globally distributed teams without duplicating data across locations.
