Playground Games

Playground Games is a British AAA game developer creating large-scale open-world racing and action role-playing experiences for Xbox consoles and PC. A first-party studio within Xbox Game Studios, it develops games from Royal Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, and operates as part of Microsoft Gaming.

Founded in 2010 by industry veterans Gavin Raeburn, Ralph Fulton and Trevor Williams, the studio first established itself through its work on the Forza Horizon franchise. Developed in collaboration with Turn 10 Studios and Microsoft, the series combines driving simulation foundations with open-world festival settings, vehicle-focused gameplay and dynamic environments. Playground Games has developed Forza Horizon, Forza Horizon 2, Forza Horizon 3, Forza Horizon 4 and Forza Horizon 5.

Game development

The studio’s capabilities span the full AAA development process, including concept development, game and systems design, engineering, art, animation, audio, production and quality assurance. Its specialist areas include:

• Open-world design and world-building
• Racing-game handling, vehicle simulation and physics
• High-fidelity graphics, rendering, and dynamic weather and lighting systems
• Action RPG combat, narrative and progression systems
• Real-time multiplayer networking and ongoing live-service support

Playground Games expanded beyond racing in 2017 by establishing a dedicated team for a large-scale open-world action RPG. Microsoft revealed the studio’s Fable reboot at the Xbox Games Showcase in 2020; the project remains among its announced development work, alongside Forza Horizon 6.

Xbox Game Studios

Microsoft acquired Playground Games in June 2018, making it a wholly owned Xbox Game Studios developer. The studio continues to support and expand its game development capacity while working on proprietary ForzaTech technology and production pipelines for its games.
