About Megalis VFX
Megalis VFX is a Tokyo-founded visual-effects and 3DCG animation studio delivering end-to-end work for feature films, television and streaming productions, game cinematics, and large-format experiential media. Its bilingual English- and Japanese-language production environment brings together international and Japanese artists across a multicultural, artist-centric operation.
Originally established as a Houdini-focused effects boutique, the studio has developed into a full digital-production house spanning VFX supervision, CG animation, creature work, asset creation, layout, lighting, look development, compositing, and colour finishing. Its technical practice includes procedural simulation, USD and Solaris scene assembly, and pipeline and tool development for complex episodic and feature workflows.
Capabilities
- Visual effects and full-pipeline production for live-action and animated projects
- Full-CG character animation, creature FX, cloth, hair, feather, muscle, and skin simulation
- 3D assets and environments, including modelling, texturing, layout, camera staging, and matchmove
- Lighting, compositing, digital intermediate, and colour grading
- Procedural and R&D workflows using Houdini, Maya, USD, and Solaris
Megalis was the primary CG animation vendor on ONI: Thunder God’s Tale, working with Tonko House to translate a miniature stop-motion-inspired aesthetic into digital 3D through a procedural production pipeline. The series received two Annie Awards and three Children’s & Family Emmy Awards.
Its credits also include VFX work on Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead, Yu Yu Hakusho, The Nevers, Final Fantasy XVI, Marvel’s Spider-Man, Fullmetal Alchemist: Final Chapter, Alice in Borderland, Shin Kamen Rider, Belle, and THE DAYS.
In 2024, TBS Holdings made a minority capital investment in Megalis and formed a strategic co-production alliance involving TBS subsidiary THE SEVEN. The studio subsequently expanded its European presence through its Avignon-based French branch, Megalis VFX France.
