About Lumatic Animation & VFX

Lumatic Animation & VFX is an independent German animation and visual-effects studio operating under the public name LUMATIC. Founded in 2014, the company combines character-focused animation with high-end CGI and visual-effects work for theatrical features, streaming and television productions, original shorts, and European co-productions.

The studio’s work spans the full production process, from visual development, storyboards, character design and technical layout through creature rigging, look development, lighting, shading, compositing, and production workflow supervision. Its capabilities include 3D character performance, digital creatures, complex world building, set extensions, digital crowds, wire removal, and photorealistic visual effects.

Feature animation and VFX

Lumatic has served as a creative lead and character-animation partner on family and hybrid productions. Its credits include Dragon Rider / Firedrake the Silver Dragon, the The School of Magical Animals series, Child's Play, Sun & Concrete, Treasure, The Life of Wishes, and Superbuhei. The studio has also delivered visual effects for Berlin ER / KRANK Berlin.

Its original-film background includes Our Wonderful Nature, Flamingo Pride, Chump & Clump, and Our Wonderful Nature – The Common Chameleon. These projects helped establish a style that combines expressive character animation with detailed CGI lighting.

Production approach

The company works as an agile boutique operation, bringing senior creative and technical supervision to feature-scale pipelines and expanding its specialist capacity for larger productions. Alongside service work, it participates in co-production and creative-lead roles for feature films, supporting projects from early design through final delivery.

Lumatic’s work serves theatrical family animation, live-action/CGI hybrids, live-action VFX, premium episodic content, original animation, advertising, and cinema trailers. The studio remains active as a German animation and VFX producer with production operations in Berlin and Munich.

Leadership and production systems

  • The company’s managing directors are Michael Herm, Dennis Rettkowski, Lars Krüger, and Alexander Pohl. The studio was co-founded by those four animation filmmakers and technical artists alongside director Tomer Eshed.
  • Lumatic’s digital pipeline uses Autodesk Maya, SideFX Houdini, Foundry Nuke, Mari, and Pixar RenderMan. Pipeline and resource tracking are managed through Autodesk Flow Production Tracking, formerly known as ShotGrid.

Development history

Lumatic grew from independent short-film work into a feature-animation and VFX operation. Its early creative origins are connected to the Berlin-Brandenburg animation community, including the Film University Babelsberg Konrad Wolf.
