About Lucasfilm Animation
Lucasfilm Animation is Lucasfilm’s dedicated digital animation studio and production division, focused on computer-generated storytelling for film and television within the Star Wars franchise. Formed in 2003 to develop 3D CGI animation, the studio began production work in 2005 and has since built a slate spanning theatrical features, episodic series, short-form projects, and anthology programming.
Its work combines story development and visual pre-production with a full CG animation pipeline, including storyboarding, story reels, animatics, visual development, layout, digital cinematography, modeling, rigging, surfacing, texturing, character animation, lighting, compositing, and post-finishing. The studio also manages and oversees production with external animation partners where appropriate.
Screen work
Lucasfilm Animation’s 2008 feature Star Wars: The Clone Wars introduced a long-running animated series that ultimately ran for seven seasons. Its subsequent productions include Star Wars Rebels, Star Wars Forces of Destiny, Star Wars Resistance, Star Wars: The Bad Batch, Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi, Star Wars: Tales of the Empire, Star Wars: Tales of the Underworld, and Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord. The division also produced the animated musical feature Strange Magic.
Production focus
The studio’s creative work centers on character and environment animation, cinematic action and motion choreography, visual development, and franchise world-building. Alongside original series production, its Franchise Animation activity supports international animated collaborations including Star Wars: Visions and Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures.
Lucasfilm Animation operates as part of Lucasfilm Ltd. LLC, which is a subsidiary of The Walt Disney Studios. Its production activity includes a San Francisco base and a Southern California development and production presence.
