Light & Wonder traces part of its business history to Scientific Games, founded in 1973 by John Koza and Daniel Bower, and to Autotote Corporation. Autotote acquired Scientific Games Holdings Corp. in 2000 and adopted the Scientific Games name in 2001. The company later expanded through acquisitions including WMS Industries, Bally Technologies and NYX Gaming Group.
Today, Light & Wonder is publicly traded on NASDAQ and the Australian Securities Exchange under the ticker LNW. It employs approximately 6,000–6,800 people across six continents and serves commercial casinos, tribal gaming enterprises, regulated iGaming operators, social-gaming consumers and charitable gaming organizations.

Corporate evolution
In 2022, the company sold its legacy lottery business to Brookfield Business Partners; the divested business retained the Scientific Games name as an independent operator. Light & Wonder subsequently acquired the remaining public shares of SciPlay in October 2023, making the social-gaming company a wholly owned subsidiary, and acquired Grover Gaming’s charitable-gaming assets in May 2025.
