About KingsIsle Entertainment
KingsIsle Entertainment is a Texas-based developer and publisher of family-friendly massively multiplayer online games. Founded in 2005, the studio builds persistent virtual worlds centered on accessible storytelling, community play, and strategic role-playing systems.
Its flagship title, Wizard101, launched in 2008 as a kid-safe MMORPG with narrative progression and turn-based card combat. The studio expanded its connected “Spiral” universe with Pirate101 in 2012, bringing a tactical pirate-themed MMO to PC and macOS. Together, the two franchises have accumulated more than 50 million registered accounts.
Development and live operations
KingsIsle develops, publishes, and operates its games across their full lifecycle. Its work includes:
- MMORPG and virtual-world development
- Live-service operations, player support, and community engagement
- Game publishing and global distribution
- Proprietary MMO engine maintenance and platform tooling
- Multiplatform adaptation for PC, macOS, console, and mobile devices
The studio’s portfolio also includes Grub Guardian, Rise & Destroy, EverClicker, and Animal Cove: Match 3 Adventure. It is developing Ravenwood Academy: A Wizard101 Story, a single-player life-simulation and visual-novel spinoff.
Franchise expansion
Following its 2021 acquisition by Media and Games Invest plc—now Verve Group SE—KingsIsle became part of the gamigo publishing organization. The company retained its focus on core MMO operations and franchise expansion, including console versions of Wizard101 for PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch released in 2026.
KingsIsle’s work combines long-running online-game operations with family- and teen-oriented digital entertainment, using story-driven worlds and card-based RPG mechanics to serve a broad all-ages audience.

Company history
Founder Elie Akilian established KingsIsle with veteran game designers and engineers from id Software, Ion Storm, and Midway Games. The company operated discreetly during its early development period before publicly unveiling its mission in 2008.
Business evolution
After the 2021 acquisition, KingsIsle’s mobile-games team was spun off as Wimo Games. This left KingsIsle focused on its core MMO operations and expansion of the Wizard101 and Pirate101 franchises.
