About Funcom

Funcom is a Norwegian-founded video game developer and publisher focused on persistent online worlds, MMORPGs, and open-world survival experiences. Founded in Oslo in 1993, the company has grown from early console projects into a developer and publisher of long-running online games and licensed entertainment properties.

Its early international successes included the adventure game The Longest Journey and the science-fiction MMORPG Anarchy Online. Funcom later expanded its online catalogue with Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures, The Secret World, and Secret World Legends. The 2017 release of Conan Exiles established a major focus on open-world survival crafting and remains a live-operated title.

Development and publishing

Funcom develops and publishes games for PC and console platforms, combining Unreal Engine development with proprietary MMO client/server infrastructure, backend networking, and live-service operations. Its capabilities span:

  • Full-cycle game design, development, production, and quality assurance
  • Global publishing, marketing, localization, and server hosting
  • Online infrastructure and live operations for persistent multiplayer games
  • Development and management of original and licensed entertainment IP

The company released Dune: Awakening in 2025, an open-world survival MMO created in collaboration with Legendary Entertainment and Frank Herbert’s estate. Its catalogue also includes publishing work on projects such as Dune: Spice Wars, Aloft, Conan Chop Chop, Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden, and Metal: Hellsinger.

Long-running online worlds

Funcom’s work is rooted in the design and support of large-scale online experiences. Its teams maintain live-service games while developing new projects across game development, publishing, online operations, and franchise stewardship. The company is wholly owned by Tencent Holdings Ltd. and operates through Funcom’s corporate structure, including its Oslo-based operating entity and holding company.
