About Crytek GmbH

Crytek GmbH is a German AAA game developer, publisher and real-time 3D technology company. Founded in Coburg in 1999 by Cevat, Avni and Faruk Yerli, the business later moved its global headquarters to Frankfurt am Main, where it develops games and maintains its proprietary CRYENGINE technology.

The studio became internationally known after its X-Isle: Dinosaur Island technology demonstration led to a partnership with Ubisoft and the 2004 release of Far Cry. It subsequently created the Crysis franchise, including Crysis, Crysis Warhead, Crysis 2 and Crysis 3, and worked with Electronic Arts on the series. Crysis became especially associated with high-end PC graphics, open environments and advanced real-time rendering.

Games and technology

Crytek develops and publishes premium games across PC, console and virtual-reality platforms. Its portfolio includes Ryse: Son of Rome, The Collectables, The Climb, Robinson: The Journey, The Climb 2, Crysis Remastered and Crysis Remastered Trilogy. The company continues to support its live-service multiplayer title Hunt: Showdown, which was upgraded as Hunt: Showdown 1896 in 2024, while Crysis 4 remains in development.

CRYENGINE is central to the company’s work as both an internal production platform and licensed middleware. Its capabilities span high-end real-time rendering, physics simulation, dynamic lighting, photogrammetry, environmental audio and cinematic or architectural visualisation. Crytek also provides engine licensing and developer support alongside game development and publishing.

Focused operations

After expanding internationally during the late 2000s and early 2010s, Crytek restructured in 2016 to concentrate on its Frankfurt studio, proprietary technology and premium intellectual property. Its Istanbul subsidiary supports regional publishing, community management, marketing and business development. The company remains active in game production, publishing and real-time 3D software.
