About Abstraction
Abstraction is a Dutch independent game-development and technical co-development studio focused on complex multi-platform adaptation, porting, performance optimisation, and original IP production. Based in the Netherlands, it works with major publishers and development teams on demanding AAA and major-indie projects while also developing its own games.
The studio’s work spans creative co-development, systems engineering, console and PC adaptation, technical art, and full-cycle production. Its teams support games across modern consoles, PC, handheld, cloud, and legacy platforms, with particular emphasis on challenging codebases, high-performance graphics, shaders, level-of-detail pipelines, networking, multiplayer integration, and architectural refactoring.
Technical co-development
Abstraction is structured to take on high-complexity development work, including multi-platform launches and projects requiring deep engineering intervention. Its capabilities include:
- Creative co-development and DLC production
- Game adaptation and porting across 16 core platforms
- Unreal Engine and proprietary-engine optimisation
- Performance engineering, technical rescue, and legacy-platform work
- Technical art, 3D character modelling, and asset-integration pipelines
- Full-cycle development for original IP and external projects
Its portfolio includes creative co-development, engineering, adaptation, and technical support on titles such as Baldur’s Gate 3, Halo: The Master Chief Collection, Mass Effect: Legendary Edition, Dune: Awakening, Gigantic: Rampage Edition, Ark: Survival Evolved, Frostpunk, Hotline Miami Collection, and Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night.
Founded in 2007, the company has grown from original casual-game development into a specialist partner for technically demanding productions. It reports more than 200 SKUs across over 60 titles, combining external co-development engagements with ongoing work on unannounced internal intellectual property.
Following a founder-led buyout effective 1 January 2026, Abstraction operates independently and continues a commercial partnership with Virtuos.
