About the role
Role Overview
Design · Copenhagen · Onsite
Triband is the award-winning studio behind the WHAT THE? comedy game series, played by millions worldwide. From our home in central Copenhagen, more than 60 wonderful humans are united by a simple mission: to make everyone laugh.
Triband is working on our most ambitious project to date: a new systemic open-world game built around a beloved IP, with our own spin on it. A bold new direction, and we're looking for a Senior World Designer to plan, prototype, and build this world. You'll shape the big picture (the areas, how they connect, and how players find their way around) and work hands-on in the engine to bring it to life together with artists, designers, and the rest of your team.
What You'll Do Day to Day
- Plan the world and lead its conceptualization, keeping a clear overview and vision for the whole map and for each new area before we start building it
- Create distinct spaces, biomes, and sections of the world (grounded in the real world), working closely with the art team to make each one feel unique
- Collaborate with artists and your team on environmental storytelling that gives each region its own identity
- Design how players navigate the world, using landmarks and the systems behind them
- Establish and maintain the world-creation pipeline, workflows, and hierarchy structures
- Work with developers on the tools that help build the world, such as traffic networks
- Gather needs from across the team and make sure they land in the right places in the world
- Build and implement hands-on in the engine like the rest of the team
You're a Great Match If
- You have extensive in-engine experience. We use Unity, so that's preferred, but experience with other engines works too
- You've worked as a world or level designer on an open-world game as part of a team, and you know the common pitfalls of open-world design
- You have a strong macro-level design approach, balancing ideas and needs from different team members to create spaces that are believable, navigable, and fun
- You have experience establishing and maintaining detailed world and content documentation, and you like maps and spreadsheets
- A tidy hierarchy makes you happy, and you keep the small details and the big picture in view at the same time
- “Let’s try it out” is your favorite way to solve a problem
- You iterate on your work and stay open to changing it as the project evolves
- Balancing the needs of artists, designers, and programmers is a puzzle you enjoy rather than a chore
Nice to Have
- You enjoy building moment-to-moment, concrete level design too
- You can make people see a space before it exists, through a mood board, a rough walkthrough, or the story of a player’s first hour there
- You have an interest in urban planning and/or architecture
- You keep up with industry norms in open-world games
- You're drawn to casual, family-friendly, quirky universe building and storytelling
- You have experience prototyping mini games and activities
What Always Matters to Us at Triband
- You thrive in taking ownership of your area: you spot problems, seek advice when needed, and implement creative solutions that push projects forward.
- You're motivated by collaboration, mutual respect, inclusiveness, and creativity, and you actively contribute to sustaining that culture.
- You believe games are made by teams, not solo rockstars, and that good ideas can come from anyone.
- You bring curiosity, generosity, and flexibility, along with strong opinions, especially when they come with reasoning, openness, and a willingness to actually test them.
- You're up for experimentation, and at the same time you don't get too precious when the experience tells you you're wrong.
- You value a positive work environment and contribute to keeping the studio a fun and supportive place.
