About the role

Company Overview

We’re a games studio focused on building games that bring people together. We believe that games delivering the highest fun-per-minute have the highest chance of success. As a start-up, we are scrappy, resourceful, highly collaborative, and focused on outcomes and shipping builds over process and meetings. We hire multi-talented individuals who can operate autonomously and at speed, with every role being hands-on and working directly on our games.

Role Overview

We’re looking for a Senior Technical Artist for a 6-month contract, with potential to extend. The role involves creating VFX and development tools to contribute to art production on an unannounced co-op combat game, as well as supporting Tech Art on multiple projects across the studio.

Key Responsibilities

1. Own VFX and Technical Art

Primary focus on making VFX and identifying/creating solutions and tools to speed up the art development pipeline.

  • Success Metrics:
    • Owning the VFX pipeline and crafting fun, playful, and physical visuals for a combat-heavy game.
    • Using VFX to clearly communicate gameplay, impacts, and player feedback.
    • Grasping project art style and technical requirements while adapting quickly.
    • Identifying repetitive or inefficient workflows and building lightweight tools, automation, and procedural solutions.

2. Force Multiplier

Acting as an invaluable team member beyond asset creation.

  • Success Metrics:
    • Communicating and collaborating across disciplines to solve gaps between art, design, and engineering.
    • Joining playtests and contributing to the game experience beyond art.
    • Identifying risks and constraints early to redirect effort when needed.
    • Being proactive and identifying meaningful work to keep momentum during downtime or when blocked.

3. Implement Assets in Engine

Taking ownership of asset implementation in-engine.

  • Success Metrics:
    • Importing, setting up, and hooking up assets.
    • Handling setup for materials, prefabs, folders, and naming.
    • Fixing materials, collision, and general art bugs in-engine.
    • Spotting inefficiencies and offering better solutions.
    • Keeping assets and scenes well-optimized without sacrificing the game’s vision.

Requirements

  • Experience: Senior level; comfortable working autonomously with high-level direction and championing areas of responsibility.
  • Scope: Comfortable supporting multiple projects, overseeing the studio’s Tech Art Pipeline, and utilizing emerging technologies.
  • Skillset: Broad artistic and technical skills including VFX creation, supporting 2D/3D assets, tool creation, automation, and understanding of artistic game development pipelines.
  • Unity Proficiency: Able to create/hook up particle systems, use scripting/visual scripting to bridge art and code, and diagnose/fix VFX issues.
  • Software: Comfortable in Blender (preferred) or able to transition quickly.
  • Mindset: Prioritizes speed and efficiency. Project-first focus (prioritizing the experience over art awards or portfolio pieces).
  • Optimization: General understanding of supporting optimization and performance for online multiplayer titles from an art perspective.

Bonus Skills

  • Shader creation
  • Rigging
  • Animation implementation / set up
  • C# Scripting

Contract Details

  • Duration: 6-month contract, with potential to extend.
  • Location: Remote-working position, open to candidates within the UK.
