About the role

About Unity Services Foundation

In addition to our Editor and Engine, Unity offers a variety of solutions for building games and real-time data enhanced 3D experiences. Our team, Unity Services Foundation, is essential in this effort, providing foundational features to all internal service teams building Cloud services. As a platform team, we enable our internal users to save time and effort, allowing them to focus on developing unique features for their services. We build core functionality so internal teams don't have to reinvent the wheel.

We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join our team in Montreal. You will be the technical anchor for our core API Gateway platform, which processes a billion daily calls, and shapes how Web APIs are built and operated across Unity. Our Gateway platform provides foundational features to handle authentication, authorization, rate limiting, core entities management and many other features to develop, publish and operate APIs at scale. Our goal is to make it simple for service teams to expose endpoints through our Gateways and use core API features using our platform directly — while ensuring high API standards and consistency across all Unity services.

This is a technical leadership role. You will still write and ship code regularly, but a significant part of your time goes to defining how problems get solved, and often what problem we should be solving in the first place. You will be comfortable with ambiguity, act as the engineering manager's technical right hand, and be the person whose involvement makes delivery predictable. Your influence will not stop at our team's boundary: you'll carry an outlook on how our domain interacts with the rest of Unity Services Foundation, and you'll take what works here and help apply it across the wider organization.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Serve as the primary technical anchor for the Gateway domain — own the architectural health of our systems end to end, from design through implementation, testing, and long-term operation.
  • Act as a force multiplier: mentor engineers, set the bar for technical excellence by example, and proliferate good practices across the team and adjacent teams.
  • Full technical ownership: work with stakeholders to identify and address technical debt, take charge during critical incidents, bringing clarity and resolution.
  • Partner with the engineering manager, product manager, and stakeholders as the first responder on intake: turn ambiguous friction into a defined problem with clear scope and requirements.
  • Own long-term technical planning for the domain — identify gaps and technical debt proactively, propose the work, and build alignment behind it.
  • Contribute beyond the team to organization-wide technical initiatives, such as shared libraries, infrastructure, API standards, security and compliance work, and the technical leadership community across USF.

What We're Looking For

  • Extensive track record designing, developing and operating high-quality web services and/or gateway solutions at scale, including as the person accountable for the outcome.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership: mentoring engineers, raising the engineering bar of a team, and driving multi-quarter initiatives that span systems and teams.
  • Ability to operate with ambiguity — to take a vague problem, define it with stakeholders, and lead it to a shipped solution.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to influence technical direction across teams, stakeholders, and leadership, including the judgment to push back when a proposal doesn't hold up.
  • Experience building and evolving platforms and APIs used by many other engineering teams.
  • Strong experience in Golang / TypeScript, or any other commonly used language for web development, with a bias toward staying hands-on.
  • Solid experience with Google Cloud (or any of the other major Cloud platforms), including production operations and incident response.
  • Expertise with Kubernetes.

You Might Also Have (Optional)

  • Expertise with Gateway related technologies (Istio, Envoy, etc.).
  • Experience defining API standards or governance across a large organization.
  • Experience leading a technical committee, guild, or similar cross-team forum.
  • Experience with security and compliance frameworks such as SOC 2.
  • Experience with ArgoCD.
