Key Purpose of the Job

The role requires a flexible skill set to adapt to different looks and stylizations across a wide variety of model types. The candidate must possess strong artistic foundations to create complex and detailed 3D environments, combined with technical proficiency to ensure assets are clean and efficient. The team builds complex 3D environments and set pieces by taking direction from the Production Designer and working with the Layout Department and development artists. Use of reference material is essential to ensure high levels of detail.


Responsibilities

  • Create unique and detailed CG environment models using provided reference material.
  • Submit work for regular reviews and address artistic and technical feedback.
  • Perform quality checks on work before handing it off to downstream departments using DNEG protocols.
  • Learn and become familiar with DNEG Modelling Department workflows and pipeline tools.
  • Attend various project-specific and studio reviews and meetings.

Requirements

  • Experience working on feature animated films of varying artistic styles.
  • Production experience as an Environment Modeller.
  • Good understanding of organic and hard surface modelling, including:
    • Architecture
    • Props
    • Vegetation
    • Vehicles
    • Urban and natural environments
  • Familiarity with a modular approach to build efficient assets.
  • Understanding of clean, efficient modelling and its impact on downstream departments.
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate with other artists and team members.
  • Ability to work closely with the Modelling Lead/Supervisor.
  • Ability to follow direction and improve the look and quality of an asset with every iteration.
  • Traditional sculpting techniques using digital tools such as Maya or Z-brush.
  • Strong sense of form, scale, and proportion.

Additional Skills

  • Degree in Computer Animation, Industrial Design, Architecture, or a relevant field.
  • Knowledge of related software, such as Houdini and SpeedTree.

  • This is a unionized position covered by a collective agreement between DNEG and IATSE.
