About the role

Company & Studio Overview

Red Thread Games is an Oslo-based indie studio behind Dreamfall Chapters, Draugen, Dustborn, and Hello Sunshine.

About the Project

Hello Sunshine is a single-player and co-op multiplayer survival mystery set in the ruins of a corporate empire. Walk in the shadow of a giant robot during the hot days; stay close to keep warm during the cold nights. Scavenge, craft, upgrade — and piece together the broken puzzle of a world ruled by AI automation gone wild.

Job Description

You’ll work closely with our art director, community and marketing team to create a wide range of visual assets for Hello Sunshine.

Your responsibilities will include graphic design, illustration, layout, typography, and visual communication, with an emphasis on creating artwork that feels consistent with the game’s world and visual identity.

We’re particularly interested in someone who can communicate ideas clearly through simple, expressive illustrations and thoughtful graphic design. This includes everything from instructional drawings and diagrams to environmental graphics, signage, branding, and promotional materials.

You’ll also help prepare and organise assets for use in the game, ensuring that your work is technically sound, appropriately formatted, and easy for other team members to integrate.

Depending on your experience and interests, the role may also involve motion graphics and other forms of visual content creation.

What We’re Looking For

You should have a strong portfolio demonstrating professional graphic design and illustration skills, including the ability to work across different styles and visual formats.

In particular, we’re looking for:

  • Strong graphic design fundamentals, including layout, typography, composition, colour, branding, and visual hierarchy.
  • Strong illustration skills, particularly stylised illustration, vector artwork, iconography, diagrams, and instructional graphics.
  • Expert proficiency with Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.
  • The ability to adapt to different visual styles and work confidently within an established art direction.
  • Experience creating marketing and promotional materials for both digital and print.
  • A good understanding of visual storytelling and how to communicate information and ideas through clear, engaging graphics.
  • The ability to develop cohesive visual systems, ensuring consistency across different assets and applications.
  • Strong technical skills in preparing, exporting, organising, and maintaining production-ready assets.
  • Excellent attention to detail and the ability to take artwork from initial concept through to final delivery.

Experience in any of the following would be an advantage, but isn’t required:

  • Adobe InDesign, After Effects, and Premiere Pro.
  • Motion graphics, animation, and basic video editing.
  • Environmental graphic design, including signage, packaging, posters, labels, and other printed materials.
  • Creating 2D assets for video games, including interface elements, textures, decals, and environmental artwork.
  • Familiarity with Unreal Engine, particularly importing and working with 2D assets.
  • Photo editing, retouching, and compositing.
  • Experience developing visual identities, fictional brands, or graphic systems for fictional worlds.

About You

We’re looking for someone who combines strong creative instincts with practical production skills.

You should enjoy working across different types of design challenges, from expressive illustrations to functional graphics that need to communicate information quickly and clearly.

You should be comfortable taking direction, interpreting feedback, and adapting your work to fit the needs of a larger creative project. At the same time, we value people who bring their own ideas, propose creative solutions, and take ownership of their work.

Because we’re a relatively small team, versatility, independence, and good communication are important. You should be organised, reliable, and comfortable collaborating with artists, designers, writers, and other developers.

Above all, we’re looking for someone who understands that graphic design and illustration aren’t simply decorative. They’re essential tools for building a believable world, communicating ideas, and creating a distinctive visual experience.

Use of Generative AI

Red Thread Games does not permit the use of generative AI to create visual assets for our games or marketing materials. All illustrations, graphic designs, and other visual content must be created by human artists and designers, without the use of AI-generated imagery.

This policy also applies to portfolios submitted as part of the application process. Portfolios containing AI-generated artwork will automatically disqualify the applicant. We’re looking for skilled artists and designers, not prompt engineers. We value original work, artistic judgement, technical craftsmanship, and the creative skills that come from years of practice and experience.

Practical Information

  • Position Type: Initially a three to four month contract position.
  • Working Conditions: Working remotely with our development team in Oslo. Overlap with normal European working hours will be necessary for collaboration with the development team.
  • Start Date & Workload: The contract duration, workload, and start date will be agreed with the successful candidate.
  • Application Requirements: Applicants should include a CV or résumé and a portfolio demonstrating relevant graphic design and illustration work. We’re particularly interested in portfolios that show versatility, strong design fundamentals, stylised illustration, and the ability to work within different visual identities. Examples of environmental graphics, fictional branding, instructional illustrations, or game-related artwork are especially welcome.
