Role Overview
The Associate Gameplay Animator will help create high-quality, responsive character animations that bring games to life. This role involves working alongside designers, riggers, programmers, and fellow animators to contribute to locomotion, traversal, combat, and other gameplay systems using hand-keyed animation and motion capture data. Responsibilities include implementing animations directly in-engine and developing technical skills under the guidance of experienced team members.
Responsibilities
- Creating high-quality character animations for locomotion, traversal, combat, and other gameplay systems.
- Working with both hand-keyed animation and motion capture data.
- Integrating and testing animations directly in-engine.
- Working with animation state machines, blend trees, and animation layers.
- Collaborating with designers, riggers, programmers, and fellow animators to balance visual quality with responsive gameplay.
- Supporting motion capture shoots and assisting with motion capture data cleanup.
- Testing animations in context and responding to feedback from the wider development team.
- Assisting with troubleshooting animation and implementation issues under the guidance of senior team members.
- Learning and working with proprietary tools and established animation pipelines.
- Contributing to the continued improvement of animation workflows and overall gameplay quality.
Qualifications
- 1+ years of professional production experience, or equivalent junior, internship, or game development experience.
- Strong working knowledge of Autodesk Maya, including animation layers and the Graph Editor.
- A strong understanding of realistic body mechanics, weight, timing, and character performance.
- An understanding of how animation supports responsive and engaging gameplay.
- A portfolio or demo reel demonstrating character animation skills.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
- A detail-oriented approach to work.
- A willingness to receive feedback, continue learning, and develop technical skills.
- The ability to work effectively within a collaborative, remote-first team.
Bonus Points
- Experience using Unreal Engine or Unity.
- Familiarity with MotionBuilder.
- Experience working with and cleaning up motion capture data.
- Familiarity with gameplay animation systems and in-engine implementation.
- A love of playing and creating video games.
