About the role
Job Overview
Hiring a remote game artist (concept + 3D) to create the visual style and assets for a 100+ player multiplayer roleplaying sandbox game (makRP). Our first gamemode is Mafia RP (cops vs. robbers, where robbers craft illegals, sell, make money, commit crimes, and expand, while police counter them).
What You'll Work On
- Create how the game looks and turn it into assets: characters, environment, props, mood, vehicles, etc.
- Target a stylized look that blends goofy and serious.
- Work alongside a technical artist who handles the tech side, allowing you to focus on visual design and assets.
Who We're Looking For
- Creativity, eye for design, and ability to take an idea from concept to asset matter most (school background and past employers are not considered).
- Must resonate with the game concept and want to design how this world should look.
Work Details
- Fully remote.
- Work your own hours.
- Paid per milestone/asset guide: 50% upfront, 50% on delivery.
- Short-term or long-term, depending on your availability.
How We Use AI
- AI is not used to pump out AI-generated slop built on stolen designs.
- We want your brain and your taste; a machine is not used to art direct the game.
- AI is acceptable as a tool to speed things up, organize references, or build quick drafts, but the artist still does the drawing and the final work.
Studio Culture & Working Conditions
- No 9-5, no weekly meetings, and no manager breathing down your neck.
- Work times and waking hours are flexible; all that matters is getting work done, hitting deadlines, and communicating.
- Prioritize health: go outside, turn off your phone, play, and spend time with family.
- Small team philosophy: inspired by solo developers and small teams (Minecraft, Garry's Mod, Stardew Valley, Hollow Knight) where the most innovative games are built.
- AI is used to make the team better, not to replace you.
- Keeping the team small from day one with no layoffs planned because the game needs constant updates, other games will be developed after makRP, and the team is intentionally small.
- Funded entirely out of pocket with no investors or publishers.
Compensation & Perks
- Do great work and get paid more.
- Performance-based bonuses when the game makes money.
- Extra pay if you create a system and make it much better than requested.
Application Instructions
- Submit application via the provided form with name, email, portfolio/ArtStation link, relevant work or projects link, based country, suggested pay rate, and optional notes.
- Please do not email resumes or attachments; upload them somewhere and paste the link in the application form.
- Expect up to 2 weeks to hear back due to high application volume.
