Role Overview
The VFX Editor serves as the primary liaison between client editorial and our internal VFX team, ensuring accurate, efficient, and well-organized workflows throughout production. This role requires a strong understanding of editorial and VFX pipelines, exceptional data management skills, and the ability to maintain frame-accurate sequences and deliverables under tight deadlines. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, highly organized, and adaptable in a fast-paced production environment. They communicate effectively across departments, anticipate and troubleshoot workflow issues, and take a hands-on, collaborative approach to supporting artists, supervisors, producers, and clients.
Responsibilities
- Receive, review, and process incoming client materials, including reference cuts, audio, camera data, and shot turnovers. Identify discrepancies or missing information and communicate issues promptly.
- Ingest and organize client materials in Ftrack; conform incoming shot data to internal pipeline naming conventions; renumber frames, verify take selections, and maintain accurate shot tracking databases.
- Maintain and update project sequences as new client cuts arrive, tracking frame-accurate timing changes, editorial updates, and scope adjustments.
- Organize and document VFX assets and work in progress; prepare and deliver previews, approved high-resolution final VFX plates, and other required materials to client editorial.
- Import and export VFX media for internal review and client delivery, and organize and lead internal review sessions with VFX Supervisors.
- Identify and resolve turnover, conform, and media management issues; develop clear, scalable workflows that can be consistently followed by multiple operators.
Skills Required
- 3+ years of experience as a VFX Editor, preferably on the vendor side.
- Expert proficiency in DaVinci Resolve, Avid Media Composer and Adobe Premiere Pro and relevant Adobe Creative Cloud applications.
- Strong proficiency with Ftrack (or ShotGrid/Flow), FileMaker Pro, Airtable, and Google Workspace for shot tracking, asset management, and production documentation.
- Thorough understanding of VFX pipelines, post-production workflows, and the integration of CG and live-action elements.
- Strong technical knowledge of digital camera formats, codecs, aspect ratios, color spaces (including ACES and LUTs), timecode systems, and file transfer protocols such as MediaShuttle, Aspera and FTP.
- Exceptional organizational, multitasking, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage high-volume, fast-moving episodic television workflows.
- Ability to remain calm and adaptable under pressure while responding to shifting priorities, last-minute editorial changes, and urgent requests.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to translate technical information clearly between artists, supervisors, producers, and client editorial.
- Willingness to work late evenings as production schedules require.
Skills Preferred
- Familiarity with Nuke, After Effects, or RV for pulling plates, reviewing artist work, and supporting VFX reviews.
- Ability to create quick temporary comps, slap comps, and retimes to support artists and provide immediate visual guidance to production.
- Experience working in a Linux-based studio environment; basic Bash or Python scripting skills are a plus.
