About Warner Bros. Animation

Warner Bros. Animation is a television and episodic animation production studio within Warner Bros. Television Group. Formally established in 1980 to revive production around the Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies characters after the 1969 closure of Warner Bros. Cartoons, the studio develops animation for television, streaming and home-entertainment audiences.

Its work spans hand-drawn and digital 2D animation, CG animation, adult animation, action and anime-influenced series, and feature-length animated productions. The studio’s creative services include storyboarding, character and background design, visual development, animatics, scriptwriting, voice casting and recording, production management, sound and music supervision, and post-production editorial.

Programming and franchises

Warner Bros. Animation has produced programming across major Warner Bros. and DC properties, including:

  • Batman: The Animated Series, which initiated the DC Animated Universe
  • Animaniacs, Tiny Toon Adventures and Tiny Toons Looniversity
  • Looney Tunes Cartoons and The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie
  • Harley Quinn, Kite Man: Hell Yeah!, Velma and Creature Commandos
  • Teen Titans, Teen Titans Go!, My Adventures with Superman and Batman: Caped Crusader
  • Jellystone! and a continuing catalogue of DC Universe Animated Original Movies

The studio develops content for broadcast and cable outlets as well as streaming services including Max, Prime Video, Netflix and Hulu. Its portfolio combines legacy-character revivals, comic-book and DC adaptations, original serialized programming, and direct-to-video or digital animated features.

Studio context

Warner Bros. Animation operates under Warner Bros. Television Group, a division of Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. In 2022, Warner Bros. Discovery consolidated the development and production teams of Warner Bros. Animation and Cartoon Network Studios under unified leadership while retaining the two studios’ distinct production banners. Warner Bros. Animation remains an active studio producing serialized programming, adult animation, animated features and franchise-based projects.

Leadership transition

Longtime president Sam Register stepped down from Warner Bros. Animation, Cartoon Network Studios and Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe at the end of August 2026 after an 18-year tenure. The reported departure followed a mutual decision with Warner Bros. Television Group chair Channing Dungey not to renew his contract.

Historical development

During the late 1980s and 1990s, the studio partnered with Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Television on Tiny Toon Adventures, Animaniacs, Pinky and the Brain and Freakazoid!. In 2001, the classic Hanna-Barbera production unit was folded into Warner Bros. Animation, bringing franchises including Scooby-Doo, Tom and Jerry and The Flintstones under its management.
