Tencent is a multinational technology and digital-entertainment company founded in Shenzhen, China in 1998. Its consumer platforms include Weixin/WeChat and QQ, while its wider business spans cloud and enterprise services, digital content, advertising, financial technology and online entertainment.

Through its Interactive Entertainment Group, Tencent develops, publishes and operates games for mobile, PC and console audiences. Its game ecosystem includes internal studio groups such as TiMi Studio Group, Lightspeed Studios, Morefun Studios and Aurora Studio, alongside the Level Infinite international publishing brand. These groups and brands retain distinct operating identities within Tencent’s broader organization.

Products and capabilities

Tencent’s communications and social services connect users with messaging, content and daily-life services. Weixin—known internationally as WeChat—combines messaging, social networking, digital payments and mini-programs. The company also offers Tencent Cloud infrastructure, enterprise collaboration tools including Tencent Meeting, VooV, WeCom and Tencent Docs, and digital-payment services through WeChat Pay and Tenpay.

Its technology work includes artificial intelligence and machine learning, including the Hunyuan foundation model and YouTu Lab, as well as cloud computing, real-time communications, databases and content-delivery services.

Games and publishing

Tencent Games and Level Infinite support first-party development and worldwide publishing. Tencent’s publishing and operating catalogue includes Honor of Kings, Arena of Valor, PUBG Mobile, Call of Duty: Mobile, Pokémon Unite, Crossfire, Dungeon Fighter Online, League of Legends in China, Undawn and Tarisland.

Tencent is publicly traded on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange under stock code 0700. Its global operations encompass technology, digital media and games, with regional corporate and operating entities serving markets across Asia, Europe and North America.

Founding and early history

Tencent was founded on 11 November 1998 by Pony Ma (Ma Huateng), Tony Zhang (Zhang Zhidong), Xu Chenye, Charles Chen and Zeng Liqing. Its early communications product, OICQ, was later rebranded as QQ.

Tencent Holdings Limited was incorporated in the Cayman Islands in November 1999 and completed its Hong Kong initial public offering in June 2004.

Platform milestone

Tencent launched Weixin in January 2011. Known internationally as WeChat, the service developed into a multi-purpose platform spanning messaging, social networking, digital payments and mini-programs.
