About Studio Unagi

Overview

Studio Unagi is an independent boutique animation studio headquartered in the Mile End district of Montreal, Quebec. Founded in 2024 by industry veteran Guillaume Dubois, the studio specializes in "tradigital" 2D animation, blending hand-drawn sensibilities with sophisticated digital pipeline workflows. The studio operates with strategic backing and a cornerstone partnership from the French entertainment group Ankama, led by Anthony Roux.

Creative Approach

Studio Unagi focuses on high-end 2D production for episodic television, feature films, and interactive media. Its technical pipeline is built around Toon Boom Harmony, utilizing a hybrid approach that integrates traditional hand-drawn animation with stylized digital rigging and 3D elements. This methodology is designed to balance production efficiency with the expressive, dynamic movement characteristic of Japanese anime and high-quality cinematic storytelling.

Services & Initiatives

  • Production Services: Full-pipeline delivery for TV series and feature films, covering everything from visual development and storyboarding to final compositing.
  • Interactive Media: Production of anime-style cinematics, trailers, and promotional assets for the video game industry.
  • Original IP: Development of proprietary concepts from initial bible to pilot production.
  • Wabi-Sabi Residency: An in-studio incubator program that provides independent filmmakers with hardware, software, and mentorship to develop and complete their own animated short films.

Leadership & Culture

The studio is led by CEO Guillaume Dubois, supported by a core team including VP of Production Camille Lequenne, Head of Animation Charlène Gueneau, and Technical Director Philip Franjo. Since its inception, the studio has prioritized inclusive hiring practices, maintaining a workforce with high representation of female artists and supervisors in key creative roles.
