About Sony Pictures Imageworks

Sony Pictures Imageworks is a visual effects and computer-animation studio in the Motion Picture Group of Sony Pictures Entertainment. Established in 1992, it produces photorealistic live-action visual effects, CG character and creature animation, and full-CG animated features for theatrical, streaming, episodic, and interactive work.

The studio’s creative and technical work spans previsualization, digital environments, look development, shading, lighting, stereoscopic compositing, and post-production software engineering. Its capabilities also include stylized and non-photorealistic rendering, alongside pipelines for high-detail visual effects and animated storytelling.

Technology and production

Imageworks has a substantial engineering practice supporting its production work. It co-developed the Arnold ray-tracing renderer and has contributed to open graphics technologies including Open Shading Language, OpenColorIO, and Alembic. These tools and pipeline efforts support the studio’s work across animation and visual effects production.

The company relocated its global corporate and operational headquarters to Vancouver in 2014 and moved its Vancouver headquarters to The Post in early 2025. It later established a permanent Montreal production facility in 2023, while maintaining production, creative-supervision, technology, and operations work in Los Angeles.

Imageworks is known for animation and visual-effects work on projects including:
