About Skywalker Sound Development Group

Skywalker Sound is an audio post-production studio based at Skywalker Ranch in Nicasio, California. Its roots date to 1975, when George Lucas and sound designer Ben Burtt established the operation as Sprocket Systems during work on Star Wars. The company adopted the Skywalker Sound name after relocating to Skywalker Ranch in 1987.

The studio provides sound design, editorial, re-recording mixing, music recording and scoring, Foley, and automated dialogue replacement for film, television, and interactive projects. Its work also extends to spatial and interactive audio for games, virtual reality, augmented reality, and location-based entertainment.

Audio Post-Production Facilities

Skywalker Sound works from the Technical Building at Skywalker Ranch, a production campus with feature mixing stages, sound-design and editorial suites, Foley and ADR stages, an orchestral scoring stage, and the Stag Theater. Its mixing capabilities support theatrical and multichannel formats including Dolby Atmos and IMAX.

Technology and Audio Engineering

Alongside its creative audio work, Skywalker Sound has an internal software development group that builds tools for post-production and film distribution. The team develops audio-processing workflows, cloud-based conversion pipelines, and machine-learning research for areas including speech processing, source separation, voice transfer, and generative audio.

Its Coda platform automates media-asset conversion, loudness optimization, mastering, and distribution workflows for international streaming ecosystems.

Selected Work

The studio's audio post-production credits include the Star Wars saga, the Indiana Jones series, The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Jurassic Park, Titanic, Avatar, WALL•E, Gravity, Dune, The Batman, and Top Gun: Maverick. It has also contributed to immersive projects including Carne y Arena and Star Wars: Vader Immortal.

Skywalker Sound operates as a division of Lucasfilm Ltd. LLC, which is part of The Walt Disney Company.
