Sky

Sky is a European media, entertainment and connectivity group combining television broadcasting, streaming, original content production and telecommunications. Its consumer services operate across the United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Italy, supported by a wider European network of technology and corporate operations. The business brings together subscription entertainment, live sports, news and communications services within one group.

Formed in November 1990 through the merger of Sky Television and British Satellite Broadcasting, the business became British Sky Broadcasting before later operating as Sky plc. Comcast acquired Sky in October 2018, and the company continues to operate within the Comcast group alongside NBCUniversal.

Entertainment and original production

Sky distributes television through Sky Glass, Sky Stream and Sky Q, while NOW provides streaming memberships without a long-term television contract. Its entertainment offering combines commissioned originals with other programming, alongside the dedicated broadcasting operations of Sky Sports and Sky News.

Through its production and commissioning arm, Sky Studios, the group develops, finances and produces scripted drama, comedy and factual programming under the Sky Originals banner. This activity spans European productions and international collaborations. Sky also participates in the production facilities business through Sky Studios Elstree, a 13-stage film and television facility serving both European originals and Hollywood studio projects.

Connectivity and advertising

Beyond television, Sky provides residential and commercial broadband, mobile connectivity and home telephone services. Sky Broadband and Sky Business support consumer and enterprise connectivity, including full-fibre residential broadband and enterprise Ethernet services. These operations extend the group's business beyond content distribution into the infrastructure and communications services used by households and businesses.

Sky Media provides commercial advertising services, including targeted television advertising through AdSmart from Sky. Together, the group's broadcasting networks, streaming platforms, production activities and connectivity services support a business model spanning the creation, distribution and commercial funding of entertainment. Product and technology teams across its European operations support these services and the platforms through which customers access them.
