About Rising Sun Pictures

Rising Sun Pictures is an Australian visual-effects and computer-animation studio founded in Adelaide in 1995. Working across feature films, streaming series and television, it delivers high-end digital imagery for international productions while maintaining its principal production base in Australia.

The studio's work spans photoreal creatures and digital characters, creature rigging, digital environments, matte painting, compositing and plate integration. Its effects teams create dynamic simulations including water, oceans, smoke, pyro, fire, debris and destruction, supported by 3D asset development, look development, lighting, on-set supervision and pre-visualization.

Creative and technical capabilities

Rising Sun Pictures combines artistic production with technical development. Its REVIZE™ machine-learning toolset supports photoreal facial manipulation, including cosmetic enhancement, aging and de-aging work. The studio also uses procedural-effects and compositing workflows for large-scale visual-effects delivery.

Selected credits include Sinners, Mickey 17, Deadpool & Wolverine, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, The Fall Guy, Elvis, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Gravity, The Great Gatsby, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, One Piece, Loki and Game of Thrones.

Education and industry development

Alongside production, the company runs accredited, industry-integrated visual-effects education with the University of South Australia and Adelaide University. Programs include a Bachelor of Visual Effects and graduate certificates in Dynamic Effects & Lighting, 3D Animation and Creature Effects, with senior artists teaching in on-site production facilities.

Founded by Tony Clark, Wayne Lewis and Gail Fuller, the company received its first major Hollywood assignment on Red Planet in 1999. It was acquired by FuseFX in 2021 and continues to operate under its own brand as a subsidiary of Pitch Black Company. In 2024, Rising Sun Pictures was named Australian Exporter of the Year at the Australian Export Awards.

In 2000, the company established Rising Sun Research to develop specialised software. That work produced cineSpace, later acquired by Cinetal and THX, and cineSync, a synchronised remote-review application recognised with an Academy Scientific and Technical Award in 2011 and an Engineering Emmy in 2018.
