About Mojang Studios
Mojang Studios is a Swedish game developer and Microsoft subsidiary best known as the creator and lead developer of Minecraft. Founded in 2009 as Mojang Specifications, the business incorporated as Mojang AB in 2010 and adopted the public name Mojang Studios in 2020. Its legal entity remains Mojang AB.
The studio develops and maintains Minecraft across Java Edition and Bedrock Edition, combining sandbox and survival-game development with cross-platform engineering, live operations, franchise stewardship and educational software. Its work spans PC, console and mobile audiences, as well as educational and broader entertainment initiatives connected to the Minecraft franchise.
Development and franchise work
Mojang Studios’ capabilities include:
- Full-cycle game development and engineering
- Cross-platform systems and proprietary Java and Bedrock engine architecture
- Publishing, live-operations maintenance and community-focused game support
- Licensing, brand partnerships and co-development management
- Educational software development through Minecraft Education
Alongside continuing Minecraft updates, the studio has developed or overseen projects including Minecraft Dungeons, Minecraft Legends, Minecraft Earth, Caller's Bane, and Crown and Council. It also published Cobalt and Cobalt WASD, which were developed by Oxeye Game Studio.
Part of the Xbox ecosystem
Microsoft acquired Mojang AB in November 2014. Mojang Studios operates as an active wholly owned Microsoft subsidiary within the Xbox organization, with its principal studio home in Stockholm and additional international development and operational hubs.
Its franchise remit extends beyond game releases: Mojang oversees external development partnerships, community programming such as Minecraft Live, educational outreach, and multimedia projects including A Minecraft Movie. The studio also works with partners on major Minecraft productions, including Double Eleven on Minecraft Dungeons and Blackbird Interactive on Minecraft Legends.
Mojang Studios serves interactive entertainment, educational software and media markets while continuing to manage one of games’ most widely recognized creative platforms.
