About Important Looking Pirates

Important Looking Pirates (ILP) is a Stockholm-founded visual effects and digital animation studio established in 2007. Working across feature films, episodic television, advertising and game cinematics, the studio delivers visual effects from early concept development through on-set supervision and final post-production.

Its work is particularly associated with photorealistic water and fluid simulation, underwater and dry-for-wet work, creature and character animation, digital doubles, large-scale environments, destruction, atmospheric effects and crowd simulation. ILP also develops full-CG sequences and supports productions with concept art, storyboards, previs, animatics and technical visualisation.

Production capabilities

  • Visual effects and animation: Complex FX, environments, creature work, character animation and high-fidelity CG sequences.
  • Pre-production design: Concept design, storyboarding, previs, animatics and technical R&D to help establish a production's visual approach.
  • Direction and design: Cinematic work for episodic projects, films and specialised commercial assignments.
  • On-set supervision: VFX planning and production support, including camera-tracking and HDR capture.

ILP's credits include Kon-Tiki, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, The Mandalorian, The Last of Us, Shōgun, Fallout, Stranger Things, Westworld, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny and One Piece.

The studio expanded from its Stockholm base with production branches in London and Hamburg. In July 2024, ILP joined Dream Machine FX, a global collective of VFX houses backed by Arenova Capital. It continues to operate under its own brand, culture and leadership within that international network.

ILP serves feature-film, streaming and television-drama, commercial and brand-film, and video-game-cinematic productions. Its artist-led team works across hybrid European production hubs, bringing together creative development, technical planning and final-shot delivery for demanding visual storytelling.
