About Genius
Genius is a digital media and music-technology company built around a crowdsourced knowledge platform for lyrics, song meaning, poetry and cultural commentary. Launched in 2009 as Rap Genius, it broadened beyond hip-hop into a wider range of music, literature and news before rebranding as Genius in 2014.
The platform combines lyric transcription with contextual annotation, enabling its community to explain wordplay, references and historical context. Through Genius for Artists, musicians and songwriters can verify lyrics, manage their presence and add first-hand interpretation to their work.
Content and music infrastructure
Alongside its database and editorial publishing, Genius produces original music-video journalism and artist-focused programming. Its series include:
- Verified
- Deconstructed
- Open Mic
- Genius News
- The Cosign, Genius Level and Behind The Beat
Genius also licenses lyric and music-intelligence data for streaming and third-party services, including integrations associated with Spotify and Apple Music. Its commercial work encompasses digital advertising, branded content, sponsorship programmes and live music experiences such as Genius Live and Lyrics to Life.
Acquired by MediaLab in 2021, Genius operates as an active MediaLab subsidiary. Its legal operating entity is Genius Media Group, Inc., while ML Genius Holdings, LLC is used for intellectual-property licensing and litigation. The company combines community-driven music knowledge, editorial publishing, artist tools, video production and metadata distribution for audiences, artists, streaming platforms and brands.
More about Genius
Founding and platform design
Genius was founded by Tom Lehman, Ilan Zechory and Mahbod Moghadam. Its annotation-embedded publishing engine uses a community reputation metric, Genius IQ, to support collaborative interpretation of lyrics, literary references and historical allusions.
The business received seed backing from Y Combinator and a $15 million Andreessen Horowitz investment in 2012. Its artist-verification layer has enabled performers including Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, Billie Eilish and Lin-Manuel Miranda to annotate their own work directly.
