About Gearbox Entertainment Company
The Gearbox Entertainment Company is a North American AAA game developer and transmedia creator operating within 2K, the publishing label of Take-Two Interactive. Founded in 1999 as Gearbox Software, the organization has grown from work on expansion packs and console ports into a multi-studio developer with a portfolio spanning original game franchises and cross-media projects.
Its early work included Half-Life: Opposing Force, Half-Life: Blue Shift, and Half-Life: Decay. Gearbox later launched Brothers in Arms and Borderlands, with the latter establishing its signature blend of first-person action, cooperative play, character progression, and stylized worldbuilding. The company’s credited catalog also includes Borderlands 2, Borderlands 3, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, New Tales from the Borderlands, Risk of Rain 2: Seekers of the Storm, Homeworld 3, and Duke Nukem 3D: 20th Anniversary World Tour.
Development capabilities
Gearbox develops games across the full production lifecycle, from pre-production and systems design through art, animation, cinematics, audio, engineering, UI/UX, and live operations. Its specialties include:
- First-person shooter and looter-shooter mechanics
- Cooperative online multiplayer and action role-playing systems
- Narrative worldbuilding and lore development
- Unreal Engine pipelines and tool architecture
- Intellectual-property management and transmedia development
The organization established The Gearbox Entertainment Company as an overarching parent entity in 2019, bringing its game-development studios, publishing activity, and emerging transmedia work under one structure. During its period under Embracer Group, it expanded its screen and audio projects, including the 2024 live-action Borderlands feature film developed with Lionsgate and the scripted audio series Borderlands: Dead ECHOs.
Take-Two Interactive acquired The Gearbox Entertainment Company from Embracer in June 2024, placing it under the 2K label. The company continues to develop its major franchises, including Borderlands 4, while supporting game production across its Frisco, Québec City, and Montréal studios.
