About Freefolk
Freefolk is an independent visual effects, colour grading and creative post-production studio established in London in 2003. Originally founded as Finish by Flame artist Jason Watts and managing director Justine White, the business adopted the Freefolk name in 2016 while continuing under its registered corporate entity, Finish TV Limited.
The studio works across feature film, high-end episodic television, commercials, music videos and branded content. Its integrated offering spans 2D compositing, 3D visual effects, CGI environments and assets, character animation, motion design, concept art, look development, colour grading, and on-set VFX supervision. Freefolk also supports productions with matte painting, set extensions, 2.5D projections, CG modelling, rigging, lighting and effects simulation.
Longform and commercial work
Freefolk expanded its film and episodic practice in 2016 with Freefolk Film & Episodic, building on its commercial post-production background. Selected credits include The Alienist, Cursed, Pennyworth Season 2, The Third Day, Fate: The Winx Saga, Kaos, Anansi Boys, Hijack Season 2, Napoleon and Fast X.
Its work on The Alienist received the 2018 Emmy Award for Outstanding Special Visual Effects in a Supporting Role. The studio’s output has also been recognised through BAFTA TV Craft nominations, British Arrow Crafts, D&AD Yellow Pencils, Kinsale Sharks and an Oscar nomination.
Creative technology and finishing
Alongside established Flame and Nuke workflows, Freefolk combines Baselight and DaVinci Resolve colour finishing with emerging creative-technology and machine-learning workflows. Remote real-time review and streaming capability supports collaboration on longform and commercial projects.
After operating from Soho for much of its history, Freefolk consolidated its creative operations in London and relocated to Spitalfields in 2022–23. The company remains active as an independent studio, serving film, television, streaming, advertising and music clients.
