Formation Games

About Formation Games

Formation Games is an independent, venture-backed game development studio based in London, specializing in mobile sports management and ownership simulation titles. Founded in 2019 and rebranded to its current identity in 2022, the studio focuses on creating immersive, community-driven experiences that allow sports fans to step into the roles of club owners. The team is composed of industry veterans with backgrounds in AAA development, having contributed to major global franchises such as Halo, FIFA, Destiny, and Beatstar.

Core Philosophy and Development

The studio operates with a hybrid model, maintaining a physical presence in London while fostering a culture of innovation in live-service gaming. Unlike traditional tactical management simulators, Formation Games emphasizes the executive experience of football club ownership—integrating real-world athlete performance data, stadium and infrastructure management, and competitive multiplayer leagues. The studio prioritizes free-to-play (F2P) mechanics, leveraging deep product analytics and live operations to maintain long-term player engagement.

Key Projects and Partnerships

• CLUB (CLUB Game): The studio's debut proprietary title, a mobile football ownership simulator for iOS and Android that combines squad building with real-world performance tracking.
• Content & Community: Formation Games actively produces sports culture and ownership-themed content, including the Let's Settle It and Meet the Clubs series, often collaborating with partners like Little Dot Sport and creative agencies to bridge the gap between gaming and real-world football fandom.

Leadership and Backing

The studio is led by CEO Jonty Barnes, a former executive at Bungie and co-founder of Lionhead Studios, supported by Chair Alex Horne, the former CEO of The English Football Association. The company is backed by a diverse group of investors, including Makers Fund, Little Dot Studios, and various prominent figures in the sports and gaming creator space.
