About Flaming Fowl Studios
Flaming Fowl Studios is an independent game developer focused on tactical RPGs, digital board-game adaptations, deckbuilders and strategy auto-battlers. Founded by former Lionhead Studios developers after Lionhead’s closure in 2016, the studio combines full-cycle game design, engineering and art production with self-publishing, live operations, balancing and post-launch content development.
Its work is rooted in strategic, systems-led interactive experiences. The team has developed digital tabletop adaptations, turn-based tactical gameplay, roguelike and collectible-card mechanics, asynchronous multiplayer systems, and Unreal Engine projects built with C++ and Blueprints. Its games have primarily reached PC players through Steam and GOG, with selected releases also appearing on console platforms.
Games and adaptations
Flaming Fowl co-developed the collectible card game Fable Fortune with Mediatonic, continuing the Fable license with Microsoft’s approval. The game entered Early Access in 2017, launched in 2018, and support concluded in 2020.
The studio later worked with Asmodee Digital, subsequently known as Twin Sails Interactive, on the digital adaptation of Gloomhaven. After an Early Access period beginning in 2019, the game reached full release in 2021 and was followed by the Jaws of the Lion and Solo Scenarios: Mercenary Challenges expansions in 2022. The adaptation brought Isaac Childres’ tabletop tactical campaign to digital platforms with cooperative online multiplayer and a large mission-based structure.
Recent direction
In 2023, Flaming Fowl began developing Ironmarked, a Renaissance Italy-inspired three-player cooperative turn-based RPG. When prospective publisher funding was withdrawn, the studio released a free Steam demo in April 2024, put full production on hold, and reduced its team to support long-term independence.
The studio subsequently shifted toward smaller self-funded projects, creating and self-publishing Konfronto, a science-fiction roguelike auto-battler with asynchronous multiplayer. The game formally released in February 2026, co-published with Gamersky Games. Flaming Fowl was also developing an unannounced Unreal Engine adaptation of another board game in 2026.
More about Flaming Fowl Studios
Leadership and operating model
- Craig Alexander Oman serves as CEO and director, while Michael John West is creative director and director. Marcus Lynn was a founding technical director and resigned as a director on 19 May 2021.
- The studio describes itself as fully distributed, with team members across the UK and continental Europe. Its hiring materials say: “We don’t micro-manage and don’t do office politics, not having an office helps with that.”
Independence after Ironmarked
Following the withdrawal of prospective publisher funding for Ironmarked, Flaming Fowl pitched the project to more than 30 publishers but did not secure the planned £5 million deal amid industry contractions. The studio reduced its team in April 2024 and shifted toward smaller-scale, self-funded work to support long-term independence.
