About Failbetter Games
Failbetter Games is an independent narrative game developer and publisher founded in 2009. Its work centres on interactive fiction, choice-driven role-playing games, worldbuilding, and quality-based narrative systems, with a distinctive tradition of Victorian Gothic and fantastical storytelling.
The studio began with the browser-based narrative RPG Echo Bazaar, later renamed Fallen London. Set in a subterranean Victorian world, the long-running game established the universe and storytelling approach that informed later releases.
Games and narrative worlds
Failbetter expanded from browser games into premium releases with Sunless Sea, a gothic exploration and survival RPG, followed by the Zubmariner expansion and the spacefaring sequel Sunless Skies. The studio also returned to the setting with the romantic visual novel Mask of the Rose.
Its current major project, Mandrake, is a rural life simulation RPG and the studio's first standalone title outside the Fallen London setting.
Development and publishing
The company develops and publishes games for PC, Mac, Linux, mobile, and consoles. Its services include video game development, independent publishing, narrative design consulting, and creative writing.
Alongside its original projects, Failbetter has developed bespoke narrative work for partners, including Dragon Age: The Last Court for BioWare and an interactive companion puzzle game for the novel The Night Circus.
Failbetter operates as a fully remote, distributed team. Its continuing work on Fallen London combines live-service narrative operations with development of new games and story worlds.
