About DreamWorks Animation
DreamWorks Animation is an American computer-animation studio that creates theatrical features, television series, and streaming programming for family audiences. Founded in 1994 as the animation division of DreamWorks SKG, the studio has developed a broad library of character-led franchises and original worlds, spanning both feature filmmaking and episodic storytelling.
Its early work included the traditionally animated The Prince of Egypt and the CG feature Antz. The success of Shrek helped establish the studio as a major force in feature animation, followed by franchises including Madagascar, Kung Fu Panda, How to Train Your Dragon, The Croods, Trolls, The Boss Baby, and Puss in Boots. More recent releases include The Wild Robot, The Bad Guys, and Dog Man.
Animation and production
The studio’s work covers the full animated-production process, including story development, visual development, modeling and rigging, character effects, lighting, compositing, and feature-film and television production. Its television output includes series such as Gabby's Dollhouse, Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous, Jurassic World: Chaos Theory, Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia, She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, and Dragons: Race to the Edge.
DreamWorks Animation also develops technology for its productions. Its proprietary Premo animation platform and MoonRay physically based renderer support its CG pipeline; MoonRay has been open-sourced. The company’s technical work has been recognized with eight Scientific and Technical Awards from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
Company history
DreamWorks Animation became an independent public company in 2004 after spinning off from DreamWorks Pictures. NBCUniversal acquired the company in 2016, and it now operates as DreamWorks Animation LLC within Universal Pictures and Universal Filmed Entertainment Group. The studio remains active, combining feature animation, television production, franchise development, licensing, and creative collaborations in interactive, theatrical, and themed-entertainment formats.
