About DICE
DICE is a Swedish AAA game-development studio and a wholly owned subsidiary of Electronic Arts. Founded in Växjö in May 1992 by members of the Amiga demoscene group The Silents, the company began in a university dormitory with acclaimed pinball games including Pinball Dreams, Pinball Fantasies, and Pinball Illusions.
The studio’s early work expanded into racing and action games such as Motorhead, Codename Eagle, and Rallisport Challenge. A pivotal 2000 acquisition of Refraction Games brought technology and ideas that informed Battlefield 1942, released in 2002. Its success established DICE as a leading developer of large-scale multiplayer combat games and began a long-running relationship with Electronic Arts, which acquired the company in 2006.
Development focus
DICE develops full-cycle games for PC and console platforms, with capabilities spanning:
- Game systems, gameplay engineering, level design, and world building
- Multiplayer infrastructure, netcode, real-time physics, and live operations
- Technical art, shaders, photogrammetry, and 3D environment art
- Audio engineering, sound design, voice direction, narrative design, quality assurance, and playtesting
The studio is especially associated with first-person shooters and large-scale multiplayer architecture. Its portfolio includes Battlefield Vietnam, Battlefield 2, Battlefield: Bad Company, Battlefield 3, Battlefield 4, Battlefield 1, Battlefield V, and Battlefield 2042, alongside Mirror's Edge, Mirror's Edge Catalyst, Star Wars Battlefront, and Star Wars Battlefront II.
Technology and collaboration
DICE engineered the proprietary Frostbite engine, known for photorealistic rendering, procedural destruction, and dynamic physics. The technology became a foundational engine used across Electronic Arts’ global studio portfolio.
Today, DICE is a central participant in EA’s Battlefield Studios coalition. From its Swedish development operations, the studio collaborates with fellow EA teams on the continuing evolution of the Battlefield franchise and supports games through development, launch, and post-release live service.
