About Dambuster Studios
Dambuster Studios is a British AAA game developer creating first-person action and action-RPG experiences for PC, PlayStation, and Xbox. Based in Nottingham, the studio develops high-fidelity, multiplayer-focused games, with capabilities spanning character and environment art, real-time physics, console engineering, optimisation, cooperative play, and external asset integration.
The company was formally established in 2014 after Koch Media/Deep Silver acquired the Nottingham team and the Homefront intellectual property following the closure of Crytek UK. It was incorporated as Deep Silver Dambuster Studios Ltd. before shortening its registered name to Dambuster Studios Ltd. in 2023. Dambuster Studios is part of PLAION GmbH and works within the wider Embracer Group organisation.
Development heritage
The Nottingham team's history reaches back to Free Radical Design, formed in 1999 by former Rare developers. That team created the TimeSplitters series, Second Sight, and Haze, before becoming Crytek UK in 2009. Under Crytek, the studio contributed console, multiplayer, and co-development work to projects including Crysis, Crysis 2, Crysis 3, Warface, and Ryse: Son of Rome.
Recent work
As Dambuster Studios, the team released Homefront: The Revolution in 2016, followed by the narrative expansions The Voice of Freedom, Aftermath, and Beyond the Walls. In 2018, it assumed lead development of Dead Island 2, the zombie action-RPG released in April 2023.
The studio's work combines full-cycle game development with co-development and technical delivery across console and PC platforms. Its specialist areas include first-person shooters, action-RPG systems, multiplayer engineering and netcode, console porting, and real-time gameplay technology. Dead Island 2 also showcases the team's work on detailed character and environmental presentation alongside its procedural gore technology.
Dambuster Studios continues to focus on action-oriented AAA development from its Nottingham base, drawing on a long-running local team history across original game creation, multiplayer systems, console adaptation, and large-scale cross-platform production.
