About Crystal Dynamics

Crystal Dynamics is an American video game development studio specializing in AAA action-adventure games, character-driven storytelling and world-building. Founded in 1992, it develops games for PC and consoles and manages established entertainment franchises, with work spanning design, art, engineering, animation, audio and narrative production.

The studio began as a spin-off from The 3DO Company and developed software for the 3DO Interactive Multiplayer and the original PlayStation. Its early catalogue included Crash 'N Burn, Total Eclipse and Gex. It also published Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain before developing subsequent entries in the series, including Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver, Soul Reaver 2 and Legacy of Kain: Defiance.

Franchise development

Crystal Dynamics took responsibility for the Tomb Raider series in 2003. Its work included Tomb Raider: Legend, Anniversary and Underworld, followed by the 2013 reboot and Rise of the Tomb Raider. These projects reinterpreted Lara Croft through new stories, environments and gameplay. The studio also developed the cooperative adventures Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light and Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris, and contributed to Shadow of the Tomb Raider through co-development. Its broader portfolio includes Marvel’s Avengers.

Production capabilities

The studio combines full-cycle development with co-development, technical production support, multi-platform porting and remastering. Its capabilities include high-fidelity motion capture, photogrammetry, environmental design and engine engineering. Alongside game production, its franchise work extends to licensing and advisory involvement in film and television adaptations.

Crystal Dynamics expanded beyond its northern California base through development branches in Washington and Texas. Its ownership history includes acquisition by Eidos Interactive in 1998, entry into Square Enix through the acquisition of Eidos in 2009, and acquisition by Embracer Group in 2022. It continues to operate as a game development subsidiary, combining established franchise stewardship with production of new titles.
