About Cosmographic Software
Overview
Cosmographic Software is an independent software development studio dedicated to the engineering, expansion, and commercialization of SpaceEngine, a 1:1 scale, science-based 3D universe simulator and digital planetarium. Originally conceived by Vladimir Romanyuk in 2005, the project evolved from a solo-developed passion project into a formal corporate entity in 2022 to support structured development, commercial licensing, and a global user base.
Technical Expertise
The studio maintains a proprietary C++ engine designed for seamless, loading-screen-free exploration of the observable universe. The software integrates real-world astronomical data from institutional surveys—including Gaia, Hipparcos, NGC, and IC catalogues—with advanced procedural generation algorithms. Key technical capabilities include:
- Graphics Pipeline: GPU-driven Vulkan framework architecture.
- Scientific Accuracy: Implementation of 4D spacetime geodesic ray tracing for relativistic phenomena, including black holes, accretion disks, and gravitational lensing.
- Environmental Simulation: Volumetric multi-scattering atmospheric models, climate and temperature systems, and dynamic procedural surface tessellation.
- Platform Support: Full desktop Virtual Reality (VR) integration with motion controller support.
Commercial Offerings
Cosmographic Software provides two primary editions of its simulation technology:
- SpaceEngine: The standard consumer-facing interactive universe simulator.
- SpaceEngine PRO: A professional-grade commercial license designed for film, television, and educational production. This edition includes specialized tools for high-resolution video export, transparent-background frame capture, and camera spline flight-path scripting.
Industry Impact
The studio serves a diverse range of markets, including video game enthusiasts, academic researchers, and media professionals. Its software is frequently utilized in science communication, documentary production, and museum planetarium exhibits, providing a mathematically grounded visual foundation for astronomical education and digital storytelling.
